Please join us May 4, 2019 at 10AM at Embassy Suites in San Rafael for a FREE community presentation and panel discussion on wildfire preparedness, with an introduction to important new efforts that will help make Marin more wildfire resilient. We'll have tables and booths representing a variety of stakeholders, contractors, and representatives of agencies and industries who play a role in Marin's wildfire readiness.
What: Opening with a special guest presentation from a Camp Fire evacuation survivor, the Marin Wildfire Forum will look at prevention and preparedness through a countywide lens. Representatives from local government, fire agencies, land managers, emergency services, law enforcement, community leaders and wildfire experts will update residents on progress to date, work to come, and future needs. Residents will learn what they can do to protect their homes and what we can do together to make Marin as wildfire safe and emergency ready as possible.
Why: Wildfire prevention and emergency preparedness are countywide priorities. Great work is being done in communities across Marin, but there is much more to do. Fire knows no boundaries. We must work together as one community to make all of Marin as wildfire safe and emergency ready as possible.
When: Saturday, May 4 from 10 AM to noon.
Where: Embassy Suites, San Rafael
Registration: optional but encouraged
Dr Shananmar Dewey
In the early hours of November 8, 2018, Dr. Shannamar Dewey and her husband Darin were faced with the extraordinary challenge of evacuating their new home and community in Paradise, CA. As the wind-driven Camp Fire killed 86 residents and destroyed nearly 19,000 structures, including her own home, Dr Dewey remained calm and applied decades of experience in challenging environments to safely navigate an hours-long evacuation. She'll share her compelling - and harrowing - story, with photographs and video taken during the evacuation.
Dr. Dewey is a professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Butte College in Oroville, and an accomplished whitewater kayaker, adventurer, and former college athlete and coach. She moved to Paradise, California in the fall of 2017, 14 months before the Camp Fire ignited.
Shannamar earned her doctorate in Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology from UC Davis. She is a passionate advocate for the students and the California Community College system where she's devoted her career to helping students from all backgrounds and levels of preparation succeed in college. She has a particular interest in assisting students in their general approach to STEM education.
