Red-Flag-Warning-11-08-18.png

Warning to remain in place until Friday morning.

Marin County, CA —  The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the North Bay Mountains and other parts of the Bay Area, which is in effect from 10 PM Wednesday to 7 AM Friday November 9th.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected during this time frame with a combination of strong North East winds with gusts to 60 miles per hour and low relative humidity.

The affected area includes higher terrain areas of Marin, Napa, Sonoma counties.  The concerns of this weather system are that fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

  • The following land use restrictions are in effect for the Marin Municipal Water District, Mount Tamalpais State Park, Marin Open Space, and The Point Reyes National Seashore during the Red Flag conditions.
  • Closures at Sky Oaks, Natalie Coffin Green Park (Ross), and Leo Cronin Parking Lot, MMWD
  • Mount Vision Rd, Inverness (National Park Service)
  • All open burning and burn permits are suspended on public lands
  • All watershed land use permits are canceled
  • Closures to Mount Tamalpais State Park – Roads north of Panoramic Highway are closed to motor vehicle traffic on Pantoll Road and Ridgecrest Boulevard.  All park use permits north of Panoramic Highway are suspended, including filming

Marin fire agencies will be increasing staffing as conditions change throughout the county during the Red Flag Warning.  Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution during the Red Flag Warning because a simple spark could cause a major wildfire, including the use of equipment and machinery as well as smoking.

  • Mount Tamalpais State Park information number is 415-388-2070.
  • Marin Municipal Water District information number is 415-945-1195.
  • Marin County Fire Information Hotline number is 415-473-7191.

IMPORTANT –  Marin County Fire Agencies are now coordinating to distribute Red Flag Warnming Announcements through “Nixle”.  It is important that ALL Mari residents register for Alert Marin AND Nixle, and understand the difference (they are different, and each requires a separate registration – and each is important during an emergency).  To ensure you continue receiveing Red Flag Warning and Emergency Alerts, please register for both Alert Marin and Nixle TODAY!  Visit: www.alertmarin.org and www.nixle.com to register.

From the National Weather Service:

North to northeast winds will increase Wednesday night and peak early Thursday. Winds will be strongest over the higher terrain, especially the North Bay Mountains and East Bay Hills. Winds will be weaker across the Santa Cruz Mountains, but strong enough to be included in the Red Flag Warning. Offshore flow will result in lower relative humidity, especially poor humidity recoveries at night in the hills. Red Flag Warning is now in effect for the North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills and Santa Cruz Mountains. Conditions are forecast to gradually improve on Friday with decreasing winds, but relative humidity will remain low.
